Research (highlights)

  • Founded the Registry of Hereditary and Congenital Lesions of the Eye at Northwestern University's Children's Memorial Hospital.
  • Codified the clinical findings and surgical management of the syndrome of ptosis, blepharophimosis, epicanthus inversus, and telecanthus (subsequently known as Kohn - Romano syndrome and blepharophimosis syndrome).
  • Multidisciplinary study of ocular pemphigoid at Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary.
  • Botulinum (i.e. oculinum, Botox) - one of the 50 original subinvestigators whose research and over 10,000 cases submitted - led to the initial FDA approval of Botox.
  • Developed and published (in journals and textbooks) a surgical technique in common use for the treatment of mechanical ectropion.
  • Developed and published (in journals and textbooks) a surgical technique in common use for the treatment of eyelid retraction.
  • Pioneered and published (in journals and textbooks) the diagnostic and treatment methods for the management of rhino-orbital mucormycosis.
  • Developed and was granted a U.S. patent for a unique surgical bandage.
